Altitude isn't just a number on a sign. It's a completely different operating environment for trees, and the ones that don't match that environment tend to struggle in ways that aren't always obvious until the damage is done.

At sea level, the atmosphere filters out a significant chunk of ultraviolet radiation before it reaches the ground. At Boulder's elevation, that protective buffer is thinner. For species that evolved in humid, lower-elevation climates, this kind of radiation load is like running a marathon without training. The bark dries out faster, the canopy struggles to maintain moisture balance, and the tree spends more energy just coping with sun exposure than it does on growth or root development. You'll often see this show up as leaf scorch, premature browning, or bark that cracks and peels when it shouldn't.

  3. Protect young trunks in winter. Tree wrap from late fall through early spring guards against sunscald and frost cracking.
  4. Get a professional assessment before problems escalate. Altitude stress often shows up subtly—slight canopy dieback, slower growth, off-color foliage—before it becomes a crisis. An arborist can catch these signals early.
  5. Choose the right tree for the right spot. Consult with a local professional before planting anything new. The species that looks great in a catalog may be completely wrong for your specific microclimate, soil type, and exposure.
